I’ve explained my feelings about the show and having to bid it farewell to so many people in recent weeks – but I’ve never shared them here.įor myself and so many others, the real pull of Illuminations was its music. The show chronicled Earth’s existence – from the chaos that forged it in fire in the opening scenes, to order and meaning, and ending in the lighting of 19 torches around World Showcase Lagoon and then the opening of the massive globe to reveal the final flame representing the 20th century. ![]() It held our hearts with the sort of nostalgic power that made saying goodbye incredibly hard – even if we did know that it was time. The show premiered on Octoand ended on September 30, 2019, completing a stunning 20 year run.īecause the show ran for such an incredibly long time, many of us grew up with it – or watched our children grow up with it. After all… seeing is believing. It has been one week since the final run of Epcot’s Illuminations Reflections of Earth in Walt Disney World. Even a 47yo man who was taught from a young age that Disney was pointless, can be reduced to a child for a moment, see the magic through the eyes of his childhood, and walk away believing, just maybe, he was all wrong about magic. When that is brought together and set free-anything is possible. What makes Disney Magic so real, is it’s fans holding a piece of that magic in our hearts. Some day, I plan to take my husband back (just the two of us,) and remind him it wasn’t just any ol’ memory or dream… but one his heart made. Epcot was a date filled with unexpected wonders. That night, my husband was touched by magic, and finally understood the message behind the mouse. And despite being raised so seriously and skeptical of feeling real happiness, he fell in love and married me-the women who believes in fairies, Disney Magic, mermaids, and a small world worth embracing and seeing for its beautiful and eclectic tastes and beauty. My husband grew up in a family that doesn’t believe or want magic (especially Disney magic) in their lives. I could tell he was trying to hold in emotional tears he didn’t think he had in him. And as the show played on over the water, I heard my husband sniffle. Both of us were nearing our 40s and feeling like children. I remember him, holding me from behind as we watched. After dinner, (which my husband still talks about today being one of the best meals he’s tasted,) we walked from the restaurant to the waterside for the Nighttime Spectacular. It was not just our son’s first time, but was my husband’s first time ever to visit a Disney Park. My husband and I took our 2yo son and my mother, and one day of our 6 day trip, my husband and I had a mommy and daddy date day in Epcot… just us. My favorite Epcot Nighttime Spectacular happened in 2015, in November.
